Mkhukhu Pizza: A Journey of Passion and Persistence

In the bustling township of Orange Farm, Themba Limekhaya’s entrepreneurial spirit shines bright through Mkhukhu Pizza. The name itself, “Mkhukhu,” meaning shack, reflects the humble beginnings of this remarkable venture. Themba’s story is not just about creating a pizza brand; it’s a testament to resilience, creativity, and a deep passion for quality food accessible to all.

The journey started with a simple desire for pizza, a luxury often out of reach for many in the community. Themba recognised this gap and saw an opportunity to bring a taste of indulgence to his neighbours. Armed with determination and a knack for innovation, he began crafting pizzas in a makeshift kitchen, using nothing more than a two-plate stove and a cookie tin.

The early days were filled with challenges. From testing recipes on willing neighbours to researching how rural communities approach pizza making, Themba left no stone unturned. Each flavour that emerged, from chicken mayo to tin fish, was a result of careful experimentation and collaboration, including a special partnership with Lucky Star for the tin fish flavour.

But it wasn’t just about making delicious pizzas; it was about making a difference. The onset of the Covid-19 pandemic forced Themba to pivot from his photography career to starting Mkhukhu Pizza. This shift wasn’t without its obstacles. A significant setback came when an injury sidelined him, and entrusted caretakers failed to maintain the business’s momentum.

Despite these challenges, Themba remained steadfast in his commitment to quality and authenticity. He embraced simplicity, using a wood oven to infuse his pizzas with a unique flavour. His dream of a mobile kitchen speaks to his vision of taking Mkhukhu Pizza beyond the township, to events and gatherings where his creations can be savoured by even more people.

Through it all, Themba’s message resonates: Start with passion, use what you have, and opportunities will follow. He advocates for supporting local businesses not just for the products they offer but for the employment and impact they create within communities. Mkhukhu Pizza is not just a brand; it’s a beacon of hope, resilience, and the power of pursuing one’s dreams against all odds.

As Themba looks ahead to expansion and creating more job opportunities, Mkhukhu Pizza stands as a testament to the belief that with determination and passion, anything is possible.
